What Are The Serums?

Facial serums are intensive skincare products which you can apply to your skin after cleansing procedure but before your moisturizer. They are made up of small molecules that can penetrate deep into the skin and deliver a very high concentration of active ingredients to the basal layer of epidermis.
This makes serums a great tool for targeting specific skincare concerns.
What is the special appeal of these products? You may use your favourite moisturizer for months but with combination of different serums, and your routine with be always adequate to the current needs of your skin!

Please, note that plant oils are not serums as they are made up of large molecules, which don’t have the ability to truly penetrate the top layer of skin.

Why Skincare With Ceramides Is Essential For The Dry And Sensitive Skin

WHAT ARE CERAMIDES?
Ceramides are the lipid substances that are naturally found in the stratum corneum (the top layer of your epidermis). And what is most important - they represent the main intercellular lipids of our skin.

HOW DO THEY WORK?
Let`s have a look at the composition of the lipid “matrix” of the healthy stratum corneum. There are about 50% Ceramides, 25% Cholesterol, and 25% Fatty Acids and phytosphingosine. That means that a lack of main ingredient of this “cocktail”, ceramides, is clearly associated with skin dryness and the weak skin barrier. In addition, such condition of the skin (with poor content of ceramides) is prone to loose the moisture, which results in dehydrated, flaky, and itchy skin. Thus, ceramides of your facial cream replenish this specific need of your skin and restores its natural barrier.
The proper working lipid barrier of your skin protects the living layers of the epidermis against microbes and pollution, as well as slowing down the trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL).

ENZYME PEELINGS VS. FRUIT ACIDS PEELINGS AND SCRUBS - WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

A regular skincare routine usually includes a facial peeling. However, often it's not so easy to decide what  a peeling product would work the best  for your skin. Let’s briefly discuss this topic.
Fruit Acids Peels:
Main active - a collection of intense acids (such as salicylic acid, lactic acid, glycolic acid). These products are acidic. 
Action principle - exfoliate dead skin via dissolving certain proteins and lipids that keep dead skin cells close together. The activity of this peel is highly dependant on the percentage of the fruit acids in a formula, so it might range from mild to super strong. 
Benefits - provides a fast result of softer and more radiant looking skin; provides a deep cleanse for the skin
Downsides - due to its acidity, can sometimes cause soreness or sun sensitivity. In addition, it often removes an upper layer of living skin cells, which causes irritation and a longer period of recovery. In that case, some aftercare for the skin should be applied. 
For whom this peel might work well - those who have normal (not sensitive) skin and who are seeking for faster and more profound exfoliating results. 

Scrubs:
Main active - different sorts of physical particles (such as sugar, salt, coffee, seeds, nutshells, oats, pumice, ground rice, etc.). These products are pH neutral. 
Action principle - this is a mechanical exfoliation, which removes the dead skin cells using physical abrasion.
Benefits - provides a fast cleansing result.
Downsides - As some particles particles have edges, they may cause soreness and microtraumas of the skin, which may lead to inflammation. In addition, like acids peel, it often removes an upper layer of good living skin cells, which causes irritation and a longer period of recovery.
For whom this peel might work well - those who have healthy normal skin and who prefer fast cleansing results.
Enzyme Peels:  
Main active - natural products usually obtained by the fermentation. These products are Ph neutral. 
Action principle - also cleanse your skin via dissolving dead skin cells proteins, but without irritation and causing sun sensitivity.  The activity of this peel is highly dependant on the percentage of enzymes in a formula, so it might range from mild to strong. 
Benefits - makes your skin smooth and glowing without damaging the epidermis.
      Some enzyme peelings, besides exfoliation, provide other benefits to the skin. Winter Acne

Why Do We Experience More Acne In Winter?
In fact, there are a plenty causes of seasonal acne. Let’s consider the most common ones:

- Cooler and drier air makes our skin to protect itself via producing more sebum. The excess of sebum protects the epidermis from cold and wind and reduces trans-epidermal water loss. But negative effect of it is clogging the pores and triggering skin inflammation.
- Shortage of vitamin D, which weakens skin’s immune response.
- Harsh cleansing products (such as bar soaps), which are stripping the natural oils from the skin making it to produce more oils for to balance the dryness.
- Stress (depress your immune system and unbalance the hormone level) ;
- Your lifestyle choices including diet.

Winter Skincare Solution:
1. Use only mild cleansing products such as hydrophilic cleansing oils.

How To Care For Our Skin During Winter Time.

Well, finally the winter came to Vancouver with its snow falls and cold winds. How to care for our skin during this time? What happens with our skin when the temperature gets cooler?

Firstly, the air humidity goes down, which often means more dry and less glowing skin. Even if you have oily or combination skin, the cold weather may affect it significantly causing dryness, irritation, and acne.

Secondly, cold temperature put stress on the skin’s blood vessels making them narrower and more fragile. This is why it’s important to consider some skincare changes for the cooler days.

Tip #1: Use an oil-based cleanser. The hydrophilic cleansing oil effectively dissolves the skin sebum that is stuck in the pores and allows all of the impurities to be easily removed with water. And it's a fantastic choice for the winter time because along with the cleansing properties, it provides the necessary lubrication to the epidermis, which protects it from dryness and irritation.

#2: Remember to exfoliate and use the hydrating masks. Exfoliants and facial masks are essential in a winter skincare routine. They provide immediate results while giving a moment of pleasure and relaxation. With colder weather the roughness of the skin can be more obvious, so exfoliation is important . At the same time, focus on hydration is also essential in order to prevent dryness. Avoid the mechanical exfoliation as it may cause dryness and inflammation. There's also less moisture in the atmosphere during the colder months generally. Using a humidifier in our houses, especially in a sleeping room, might really help. In fact, clean and well humidified air promotes cell turnover and helps us to maintain smooth and supple skin.

How we should care for our skin when wildfire smoke in the air?

During more than a week Vancouver sky is blanketed by wildfire smoke.

As Environment Canada officials said: “Wildfire smoke is a natural part of our environment but it is important to be mindful that exposure to smoke may affect your health”.

But does the smoke affect our skin in particular? It does! Our skin pore is about 50–70 µm and wildfire smoke particles are 2.5 µm, which means that they can easily get into our pores and do some damage.

🍃So, how can we improve our skincare regime according to this air condition?

Five common mistakes when choosing a skincare product.

1. Not knowing your skin type. In fact, its not a rare case! For instance, many people believe that their skin is dry (as it peels off and feels tight) while their skin is combination and dehydrated. Thus, they may mistakenly buy a product for dry skin, which is usually quite heavy and rich of oils. This choice may add more issues to the skin, such as excessive oiliness, instead of helping it via proper hydration.

2. Choosing the product just by its name. For example, the safety and effectiveness of “moisturizers for mature skin” may differ significantly from a formula to formula. Request more information from the skincare provider or manufacturer, if needed.

3. Buying the product without possibility to try it in advance. It’s great if the manufacturer of the skincare brand, which you are interested in, may provide you with some free samples. That will definitely help you to make a good choice. Also, if buying online, request the online skincare consultation before your purchase.

4. Following the preferences of others. If a certain product works great for a celebrity or your best friend, it doesn’t mean that it will work for you.

5. Underestimation or overestimation of your current skin needs. Some people are doing fine with just one moisturizer for day and night; however, many of us need more comprehensive skincare regime.

What is the skin pigmentation and how we can make it less visible?

Pigmentation or brown spots on the skin is a very common issue for a lot of people. This is a sign that your melanin is hyper- and unevenly produced, which might happen due to a very broad range of reasons such as:

  • Sun damage (damage of the basal layer of epidermis where melanin is produced);
  • Aging (due to hormonal fluctuations);
  • Emotional stress, which also creates the hormonal fluctuations.
  • Pregnancy (increased level of progesterone, estrogen, and malanocyte-stimulating hormone very often lead to developing the dark spots on the certain area of the face called chloasma);
  • Vitamins deficiency (usually B12 deficiency);
  • Inflammation (such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne).
  • Wound healing (dark spots usually develop on the wound place and may fade with time);
  • Genetics;
  • Some diseases (diabetes and liver distinction, for instance);
  • Certain medical treatments such as radiation or chemo therapy, or taking the medication such as oral contraceptives, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), psychotropic drugs, and others.
So, if we see the brown spots on the face, should we worry about it?
First of all, hyperpigmentation is absolutely harmless and does not require any treatment. However, some people may decide to remove them as their locations are usually on the open areas of the skin (face, back of the hands, and shoulders).
So how to lighten them? What options do we have? Oh, plenty! That is a good news. But keep in mind that all of these options have their pros and cons, hence, don’t rush, take your time and come to your decision being well informed!
Usually, the dermatologists recommend one of the following treatments to remove or lighen the pigmentation:
  • Laser treatment (intense pulse laser). It usually gives a quick result, but the spots may come back with darker color.
  • Chemical peeling. May not work for sensitive skin.
  • Microdermabrasion. It’s a fast working abrasive technique, which doesn’t work for many skin conditions such as sensitive skin. And the brown spots may come back.
  • Cryotherapy (applying liquid nitrogen on the brown spots). The skin is often heals lighter afterwards, but in some cases with sensitive white skin may heal darker.
  • Prescription skin-lightening emulsions. These products usually contain 3-4% of hydroquinon, which usually gives a good, stable, and relatively quick  result. However, sometimes the skin on the affected area may become more rough. Just try to use it no longer than for a month or two. 
  • Over-the-counter creams. These products are not so strong as the prescription ones and need more time for the result. Depending on the skin complexion, nature of pigmentation, and a person’s ethnicity, it may take 2-6 months. The good side of this treatment that it usually doesn’t have side effects and rarely cause the allergic reaction.

  • Home remedies. There are a lot of home-made recipes in the Internet, but, please, be aware that most of them are not scientifically based and may bring more harm than good. Thus, we should be very careful choosing this approach to treat our hyperpigmentation. There is a strong evidence that, for example, lemon juice or abrasive scrubs may worsen the skin condition.
And last but not least. If you know that you are prone to pigmentation, always apply a broad spectrum sunscreen and reapply it every 2 hours being outside, especially during summer time; avoide waxing.
And don’t forget your and a wide brimmed hat!

Home skincare routine step by step

All of us want to have the beautiful and healthy skin but often we forget that to achieve this goal we need to put a certain effort. Also, many of us lead a busy lifestyle with a little time for ourselves, so visiting a professional beauty salon might not be regular.

Thus, we need to determine for ourselves a clear and simple home skincare routine to stay healthy and glowing. And, in fact, it should be a routine, day by day, as skincare doesn’t work as a surgery:) Some customers of mine, when trying a new product, apply it on the one hand and expect to see the immediate result comparing the appearances of their two hands. No, it doesn’t work like that:) You need a time; depending on your skin condition and result you want to archive, it might be 1-4 weeks.
I tried to be as laconic as possible and marked out just 4 steps:

1. Cleansing. To clean your skin choose the soft and not irritating products such as Cleansing Oil (example: https://www.lukshacosmetics.com/collections/cleansers/products/cleansing-oil-with-licorice-extract-and-vitamin-e) or Cleansing Cream.

After washing your face with a cleansing product, use a toner on a cotton pad (example: https://www.lukshacosmetics.com/collections/cleansers/products/toner-with-organic-rose-water-organic-cranberry-extract-and-organic-aloe-leaf-juice). The toner finishes the cleansing procedure, gently removes the dead cells of the epidermis, calms the skin, normalizes the pH of the skin, and prepares it for the following care.

2. Serum. Facial serums are intensive skincare products which you can apply to your skin after cleansing but before the moisturizing cream. They are made up of small molecules that can penetrate deep into the skin and deliver a very high concentration of active ingredients to the basal layer of epidermis. This makes serums a great tool for targeting specific skincare concerns. Depending on the serum, apply it ones or twice time a day (usually twice).

3. Cream. Apply it after your serum. Depending on your skin type, it might be a light moisturizer or more rich nourishing cream. Often, the same product might be applied day and night; however, if the product contains some specific ingredients such as retinol or fruit acids, it mostly used for night. In addition, the day creams are usually lightweight moisturizers, while the nighttime creams are more rich regenerating/nourishing products.

If you like facial oils, use them instead of the creams (apply a tiny amount on your skin after your serum). You don`t need a cream after that.

4. If you have puffiness, dark circles, or/and fine lines around your eyes, you might need a special product for this area. Twice a day, apply a tiny amount of the eye cream on the area around your eyes with a little putting motion, don’t rub.

For the best result, ones or twice a week use a gentle peeling (it opens the pores, removes dead skin cells, and stimulates regeneration) followed by a moisturizing mask, which calms the skin, speeds up healing, and improves the complexion.

And, last but not least, don’t forget about your body! Choose a light moisturizer with calming agents such as Algae extract, Vitamins, or Aloe Vera and use it every day after the shower. At the summer time we especially need body skincare as our skin is under environmental exposure most of the day.
